Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 11 January 2018

We get a broad hint as to what drives Elly to miss out on all of those sunsets she could probably never bring herself to enjoy in the first place when she tries to explain to an unconvinced Mike that that even if she hates being a hockey mom, she can't cut and run and expect to be taken seriously.

(Strip Number 1395, Original Publication Date, 12 January 1989)

Panel 1: As Elly gets dressed to go out, she tells Mike and Liz that she's gotta be at hockey mom's in half an hour. When she tells them that there are TV dinners in the oven, Liz is okay with that but Mike acts as if Elly read his love note in public to her girlfriends.

Panel 2: Elly tells Michael to not glare at her because he has to eat John's cooking. After all, it's because he wanted to play pee-wee hockey that she has to do this in the first place. If he hadn't decided to waste everyone's life playing hockey, she could stay home.

Panel 3: We foreshadow his running home crying to Deanna because Gluttson asks him to make an unpopular decision by telling her that she can just fake sick and not go.

Panel 4: Elly tells him that he's wrong about her not being obliged to go because if she doesn't, it'll look as if she isn't supportive. The obviousness of this escapes him.

Summary: Mike never seems to have understood that his choices in life affected the people around him. This is why he eventually made an ass of himself by resigning from Portrait and leaving someone else to clean up his mess. Also, there'd be more of a gender balance at the boosters club, don't you think?

Lynn recently appeared on the Great Big Beautiful Podcast, on GeekDad.com., with Jamie Green and Justin Connors.
Their comprehensive interview with Lynn is more than an hour long, and covers a lot of ground! Tune in and enjoy.

It is so long that I do not want to write a transcript for all of it.  I will just pick a few spots and discuss them after the cut.
