Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 29 October 2017

Mike makes a big deal of being too old to go trick or treating only to change his mind because of candycandycandycandycandy.

(Strip Number 6754, Original Publication Date, 30 October 1988)

Panel 1: Since she's contractually obliged to spoon-feed people information, Lizzie tells Michael that the reason she's dressed in a chicken costume is to go trick-or-treating; she sets up an easy gag by asking him what he's going to be to which he replies "Nothin'."

Panel 2: When she says that's what he is all year round, he thought-bubbles that he saw that coming. I'd tend to disagree because he didn't get out of 'its' way.

Panel 3: The strip proper begins with Elly asking him if he wants to go trick or treating; he doesn't want to.

Panel 4: He'd rather not trudge a distance he exaggeratedly states as being ten miles in a silly costume to get a few handfuls of candy.

Panel 5: Elly shrugs and says that he can still be part of the process by chaperoning Lizzie on her trip out.

Panel 6: We face an old enemy when Lynn has Lizzie say "Tricker treat" when she and Mike show up at the home of a kindly older lady; said enemy is Lynn's need to criticize her children for not coming out of the womb speaking perfect English.

Panel 7: Since I do not have the same animus Lynn has against colloquial English, I choose to report Lizzie as saying the "Trick or treat" SHE would report herself as saying when she and Mike are at the porch of a man John's age.

Panel 8: When they get to the Enjos, Carol wishes Lizzie a happy Halloween. Since she did not do the same to Mike, he gets a mite thoughtful.

Panel 9: He tells Lizzie to wait where she is because he'll be right back after doing something unknown.

Panel 10: Said unknown thing is getting a pillow case and a quick and dirty alien disguise so he can join in the fun of trick or treating.

Summary: This is probably either yet another dig at Aaron for not being The Big Man he must have thought he was when he was fifteen OR something she saw on television. Either way, we're dealing with Something To Be Taped To A Fridge.
