Snarky Candiru2

Friday, 27 October 2017

Today's strip is a sort of example of a rather commonplace phenomenon that Lynn will decree to be a miracle. This is because when Mike tells Lizzie not to think about the ghosts he conjured up to be a sitcom monster big brother bully, he does so knowing that telling her not to think about them means that she'll be fixated on them.

(Strip Number 5039, Original Publication Date, 28 October 1988)

Panel 1: It would appear that Lizzie has embraced the Halloween spirit because she asks someone she really shouldn't about the possibility of her room being haunted. Mike reminds us that he usually doesn't have Lizzie's best interests at heart by confirming this suspicion.

Panel 2: Since he's a pea-brain who thinks that he lives in a sitcom and doesn't have to deal with something called consequences, we find Michael really piling it on with his talk of how they're all around her, under her bed, in her closet and in the shadows waiting to pounce. This has the desired by him effect of scaring her half to death.

Panel 3: Since we're setting up a John The Hero thing, she asks The Looming Shape Of Imbecile Malice what to do.

Panel 4: His advice is to try to not think about the problem. The problem is that she cannot...and he knows it. (Then again, she could be frightened by the fact that his right arm has lengthened to the extent that he can put his hand in his pocket despite it being on his knee.)

Summary: Mike might be clever enough to realize that if you tell someone to not think about something, that something is the only thing they're going to think about but he's not nearly smart enough to foresee the punch to the trachea and lecture about family coming his way that he always gets when he does stuff like this. He never sees getting his ass whupped for being a dick to Lizzie coming and always blames it on her squealing because the alternative is admitting that he's not very smart and, worse still, he's a tiresome dullard who can't get over himself.
