Snarky Candiru2

Monday, 31 July 2017

Today's strip not only foreshadows the "If I'd been more tolerant, it would have seemed if we'd had more time" thing by having Elly feel guilty about feeling free, it reminds us of something we were cheated of nine years ago today: Lynn pandering to her target demographic by having Elly tell Liz "I wouldn't have acted as if I only had kids so I could have people I could irrationally torment if I didn't care so much."

(Strip Number, Original Publication Date, 30 July 1988)

Panel 1: We go back to the Pattermanse so John can boast about how now that after a decade or so of having the kids underfoot, their absence will make him and Elly feel like newlyweds.

Panel 2: After pointing out that they've the whole house to themselves, he tells her that he can't believe how much he's enjoying this; neither can she.

Panel 3: Having noticed that she's not especially happy, John asks Elly what's the matter. (He also bugs the crap out of us by using that oh-so-unsuitable nickname.)

Panel 4: She feels guilty because she cannot believe how much she's enjoying this.

Summary: Strips like this one are why I imagine that the Elly of 2017 is sitting alone in the Tiny Train House at nights, staring at John's urn on the mantle-piece wondering why she let life slip through her fingers letting her temper get the better of her and thus missing out on the magic moments of motherhood television and movies promised her.
