Snarky Candiru2

We begin the "Elly resents taking care of needy clod Mike" arc with her going into panic mode because she has to miss a meeting just because Mike has the flu.

(Strip Number 4890, Original Publication Date, 16 November 1987)

Panel 1: We find ourselves at the library watching Sue take a phone call and tell Elly that the school secretary is on the line because Mike's got the flu. Elly is not ecstatic.

Panel 2: This is because she has to drive to the west end of town AND miss her meeting at lunch.

Panel 3: She then declaims on the unfairness of her children always getting sick when she's got too many irons in the fire as it is.

Panel 4: Sue tells the person at the other end of the telephone to be patient as Mrs Patterson always gets emotional when her children get sick.

Summary: This is yet another example of how Elly's job is defined as being in opposition to something. In two months, it'll be defined as less critical than John's job is and in five years, we'll see that it's the one thing keeping her from the inferior and shameful identity 'anonymous and useless housewife.'
