Snarky Candiru2

Today's strip has Elly go into panic mode putting dinner together only to find out that John took the kids out for dinner to be helpful. Since she did all that for nothing, John is BAD and must apologize for making her waste her time and feel guilty for nothing.

(Strip Number, Original Publication Date, 13 September 1987)

Panel 1: As Elly works away, John asks her if she's busy only to get grunted at.

Panel 2: He thought-bubbles that yes, Elly is busy.

Panel 3: A little while later, she panics when she looks at the clock on the wall and realizes that it's already six in the evening.

Panel 4: We see her panic some more as she puts dinner together and starts chanting out menu items as if that will make them appear by magic.

Panel 5: Having slammed the meal together and put in on the table, Elly announces that dinner is ready.

Panel 6: Since John, Mike and Lizzie haven't come down for dinner, she calls their names.

Panel 7: Having realized that they've all gone for some reason, she asks where everyone is.

Panel 8: Almost as in response to her question, the front door slams shut.

Panel 9: Elly is mildly curious when John says that he didn't want to disturb her when she was working.

Panel 10: Elly stands there looking as if she'd been hit on the back of the head by a two-by-four when John says that he took the kids out to eat in order to not disrupt her train of thought.

Summary: It would have made more sense and been fairer to both spouses if Lynn had done what wyntir_knight suggested and have John's offer to take the kids out to dinner go more or less unheard. It would have been even better if John had offered to take them all out to dinner and have Elly finish her work when her mind was clearer. Neither option would make any sense to the people Lynn thinks she's writing for: the harried wives of block-headed, flat-footed men like John.
