Snarky Candiru2

Wednesday, 7 September 2016

Thelma gets a reluctant Elly to enjoy the friendly game of friendship and also cutthroat competition that creates lasting grudges.

(Strip Number 1199, Original Publication Date, 9 September 1987)

Panel 1: Elly sputters in confusion and terror at the prospect of playing bingo.

Panel 2: Thelma tells her to have a little fun because it's Jackpot Night.

Panel 3: As they arrive, Thelma tells her that everyone here knows everyone else and have been playing for years and that newcomers are always welcome.

Panel 4: Except, of course, if said newcomers win the big pot. The fact that people who've been playing this for years would resent that astonishes Elly.

Summary: The reason this astonishes Elly is that she doesn't 'get' any sort of activity that requires her to be ranked. We seem to be dealing with someone who'd see Syndrome as the hero of the Incredibles. After all, if everyone is special, no one is and she doesn't have to feel bad and feel the taunting eyes of her betters who want to kick her and laugh at her for being weak.
