Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 7 August 2016

Today's slice of dog-hating life strip has Lynn remind us that Farley is like all dogs in being a big, shaggy, stupid idiot.

(Strip Number 7034, Original Publication Date, 9 August 1987)

Panel 1: We start things off with Lizzie at the back porch with a sleeping Farley being told to wipe her feet before she comes in.

Panel 2: Lizzie wipes her feet on Farley to suggest that he's pretty much inert and stupid and would thus let an army of Snake People hopped up on PCP kill the Pattersons if they gave him a treat.

Panel 3: Farley is friendly and docile when the UPS guy shows up and asks if anyone's to home.

Panel 4: Farley is happily looking for a treat from out of the census-taker's bag.

Panel 5: Farley does not challenge the letter carrier when he shoves the mail into the slot.

Panel 6: When the paperboy almost wings him with the evening paper, Farley is chill with it.

Panel 7: Something unknown and terrifying comes along to shock Farley out of his repose.

Panel 8: He growls angrily at whatever's not supposed to be there.

Panel 9: Said unwelcome presence is a squirrel.

Panel 10: As she watches Farley bark at the tree rat, Elly thought-bubbles about how nice it is to have a dog that leaves them so well protected.

Summary: The average reader is going to shrug, smile and mutter "dogs" because they know that this is just Farley being himself. They don't have the clearly documented resentment Lynn had of the real pooch so they just see a normally well-behaved dog chasing away something he doesn't like the smell of and they don't read the notes so aren't instructed to think of him as a moronic burden to the Patterson family.

The great die-off.

I've noticed recently that traffic here has really, REALLY died off over the last few years. Is it because I tend to go overboard with my irritation with the bizarre over-emphasis on Elly's seemingly endless suffering or is it simply boredom?
