Snarky Candiru2

Tuesday, 23 February 2016

Annie confuses the Hell out of Elly and also tries to make wonderful news into a problem by insisting on herself and Elly as best friends.

(Strip Number 4770, Original Publication Date, 24 February 1987)

Panel 1: Elly continues merrily on not especially noticing the hurt expression on Anne's face when she babbles that Connie's return to the neighbourhood is the best news she could get. After all, the terrible prospect that she, Elly Patterson, would have suffered the humiliating defeat of having to drive to Thunder Bay like a supplicant is gone forever so Annie should ALSO be on the verge of a storegasm.

Panel 2: She doubles down on being an insensitive clod when she emphasizes that she and Connie have known one another for years and are thus BEST FRIENDS.

Panel 3: Anne tells Elly that she's very happy for her but save for one exception, she doesn't think that she knows anyone she could call a best friend.

Panel 4: When she tells Elly that she IS that exception, the realization that she's been an insensitive clod saddens her.

Summary: The Pattersons seem to have a sort of genetic tendency to ignore the downside of good news in the heat of the moment. This is why Liz alarms Elly by getting pumped about the convenient collapse of a marriage that led her to get work near to the Pattermanse.
