Snarky Candiru2

Monday, 10 August 2015

Today's strip is the one in which a search team actually finds John and Phil. As their speculation as to whether the two men are campers indicates, it's not that hard to come to the conclusion that they nearly died of exposure within less than a mile of civilization.

(Strip Number 4661, Original Publication Date, 11 August 1986)

Panel 1: Phil turns into Captain Obvious when he tells John that the private plane has spotted them and are coming around to Unnecessary Hardship Island.

Panel 2: The copilot asks the pilot if those two guys on that island are just campers or if they're lost.

Panel 3: John and Phil signal the men.

Panel 4: The pilot interprets their wild gesticulations as meaning that these are the missing men from the city.

Summary: Once again, Lynn's need to defend the premise that GOOD people who aren't trying to scare her should live lives of such superlative dullness that they don't even notice that they've died has blinded her to the broader implications of her re-telling of the story. The lake up North was remote and took time to get to. The island is close enough to civilization that it's thought of as a campground. The men up North were in actual danger through no real fault of their own despite what she might believe. John and Phil willed this hardship on themselves being stupid.
