Snarky Candiru2

Wednesday, 8 April 2015

Today's strip reminds us that Phil blames the children he teaches for their parents' failings.

(Strip Number 4598, Original Publication Date, 9 April 1986)

Panel 1: Phil whines to Elly about how rough it is being a teacher; no matter what you do for kids, it's not enough. This is because what he does for kids is treat them like tiny adults, fail miserably and accuse them of trying to trick him or something.

Panel 2: Having to look at the same faces day in and day out makes him wonder why he bothers.

Panel 3: Elly says there must be some rewards.

Panel 4: Phil's enthusiasm is tied to the occasional time someone LEARNS something.

Summary: What Phil doesn't stick around for is the after-effect of his (and Alan's) testy perfectionism and refusal to listen; we see that tomorrow when Mike's feelings of loss and hopelessness are discounted by idiot adults like him and Elly who console themselves with the lie that children are resilient and childhood is a wonderland where pain is simply a skinned knee and none of it matters because it stopped mattering when they grew up.
