Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 6 November 2014

Today's strip is a bit of a head-scratcher because I'm not sure if we're supposed to sympathize with Mike or hate him for condemning good advice because it comes from his mom. Later on, it was clear that the latter held true but this was from when Elly was allowed to be ignorant and fallible so is a crap-shoot.

(Strip Number 4530, Original Publication Date, 7 November 1985)

Panel 1: After hockey practice, Elly tells Michael that he's leaning too far forward and that he's got to bend his knees, dig and and keep up to the puck.

Panel 2: She then states that he's gotta be sure to be aware of his immediate surroundings.

Panel 3: As he enters the change room, she tells him to push his blades into his turns with his head up.

Panel 4: Now that they're both in the change room, Darryl tells a harried-looking Mike that he sympathizes with him because his mother doesn't skate either.

Summary: I'm not sure if this is supposed to be "Elly doesn't actually know what she's talking about and is being a pain in the neck" or "Evil little boys can't wrap their chauvinistic brains around the idea of a woman knowing anything about sports." What I do know is that no matter what she knows about hockey, Elly doesn't like being a hockey mom because that porch isn't going to sweep itself and the Quality Women will burst down the door, behead her and stick her head on a pike in the front yard if she gets in the habit of cooking microwave dinners.
