Snarky Candiru2

Monday, 18 August 2014

Today's strip has Lizzie cruelly show her total hatred for her poor mother by selfishly and criminally rejecting the fall jacket she lovingly picked out for her.

(Strip Number 4516, Original Publication Date, 19 August 1985)

Panel 1: We find ourselves at Philpott's watching Elly buying Lizzie some back-to-school (or, in this case, first time at school) clothes. As she asks Lizzie to try on a butt-ugly, bright orange fall coat, Lizzie says that she doesn't like it.

Panel 2: Elly's reminder that it's for kindergarten doesn't make Lizzie like it any better.

Panel 3: Elly then plays fast and loose with logic by asking Lizzie if she doesn't want to go to kindergarten. Lizzie says she does.

Panel 4: Her telling Elly that she doesn't want to be wearing THIS coat surprises and saddens the idiot buying it.

Summary: Given that Steph was told to use the words 'stubborn' and 'willful' to describe Lizzie not sharing Elly's taste in clothing, this is meant to pander to the sort of petty authoritarian who thinks letting children have the least bit of input means totally surrendering all authority ever. You and I might see a dumb woman who's too blasted stupid to know when to pick her battles. Lynn and the former Coffee Talkers see a martyr being harassed by a monster who needs her attitude adjusted. Also, the thinking that if Lizzie doesn't want the ugly coat, she can't go to kindergarten sounds suspiciously like Assthony telling the Weird Frenchy Girl that if she doesn't kiss Liz's fat arse, Santy Claus won't like her no more.
