Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 13 July 2014

Today's strip is one of the first ones in which Lynn actively attacks Rod for aging less gracelessly than she did by making his avatar into a posturing hypocrite obsessed with his looks.

(Strip Number 7191, Original Publication Date, 14 July 1985)

Panel 1: We start things off as the Pattersons get ready for bed. As always, Elly is looking in the mirror and groaning at what her body image issues make her see as being the face of a crone.

Panel 2: John rolls his eyes and thought-bubbles "Here we go again" because, unlike Elly, he remembers that she has never been able to face her face.

Panel 3: The strip proper begins with Elly asking John if maybe she should get a face-lift and John telling her to stop worrying about her looks.

Panel 4: John sets up the conflict by making a stupid crack about how despite all odds, women expect to stay young-looking forever.

Panel 5: Elly points out that he's also showing his age; he's got wrinkles, eye-bags and a sagging jawline.

Panel 6: He replies by lecturing about how HE can accept aging.

Panel 7: He then jabs HIS finger in the air as he makes a pompous comment about how (unlike weak, silly women) men don't worry about every little line on their faces because they accept looking older as a fact of life.

Panel 8: John frowns in a sudden panic.

Panel 9: As he stares a panicked stare at the mirror, John thought-bubbles "What eye-bags?"

Summary: We can probably expect one of two things: a rant about how unfair it is Rod still looks better than she does or a not-really-sly dig at how vain and silly he is.
