Snarky Candiru2

Today's strip is all about how evil, chaos-loving children want to go to fancy restaurants so that they might demonstrate their innate hatred for their pooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooor mothers by eating messily and not being the grinning little dummies Lynn thinks that children should be.

(Strip Number 7176, Original Publication Date, 20 January 1985)

Panel 1: As our story continues, we find Elly taking the kids into a generic fast food outlet. As she does so, Mike complains about how they're still putting cowboy toys in the kid's meals while he wants a spaceman. This causes Lizzie ask if she can have it before asking how gets the free toy.

Panel 2: Elly says that she does.

Panel 3: We next see the children whine about how loooooooooong it's taking for them to order their meal.

Panel 4: Next, they demonstrate their inhuman and inhumane ingratitude by deciding that they want something other than what their loving mother orders for them.

Panel 5: We follow that by their selfishly embarrassing her in public by eating pretty much as messily as she does when she's not trying to impress people.

Panel 6: Their next act of selfish and anti-loving mother defiance is to do something that no human being in the history of time could ever possibly anticipate and fight over a drinking straw.

Panel 7: Mike sets up the punchline when he notices that all Elly ordered was a coffee and asks if she's going to eat.

Panel 8: She boasts about how they're being babysat so that John can take her out to dinner at a fancy restaurant.

Panel 9: Mike whines about how unfair it is that he and Lizzie never get to maliciously destroy the public image of the mother they're born to hate by going to places like that.

Summary: On the surface, this looks like a typical "messy little kids don't quite understand the world" thing. Given the underlying fear and hatred of the children that permeates the strip, it's not nearly as harmless as the patronizing but essentially good-natured slush Lynn stole it from.
