In today's strip, Elly thinks that someone's having left change in his pockets is actually due to the dryer apologizing for losing socks.

(Strip Number 6144, Original Publication Date, 18 November 1984)

Panel 1: As our story continues, we find Elly doing her daily ten loads of laundry. As she puts another load in the washing machine, she tells Lizzie not to play with the load she's just taken out of the dryer.

Panel 2: We get a huge hint as to WHY Elly can never seem to get the clothes clean to her satisfaction when Lizzie asks her what the words D-R-Y C-L-E-A-N O-N-L-Y spell.

Panel 3: After hurriedly hiding the evidence away, Elly selects a cycle on the dryer.

Panel 4: As she folds a shirt, the dryer hums away quietly.

Panel 5: A few seconds later, the tell-tale sound of a small object or two clanking against the drum of the dryer attracts Elly's attention.

Panel 6: As Elly reaches inside to retrieve the foreign object in question, Lizzie asks her what it is.

Panel 7: "It" turns out to be two quarters, three nickels and one dime in spare change some idiot left in his pockets.

Panel 8: Elly angrily tells the dryer that it's about time.

Panel 9: A few seconds later, Lizzie tells Michael that he's not going to believe what she just heard.

Panel 10: What he's not going to believe is that Mom says the clothes dryer's started payin' her back for all those lost socks!

Summary: Actually, Lizzie, Mike is going to believe it. This is because he remembers that his mother is a crazy woman who believed that he wanted to dress up as Boy George because nuclear war made him so angry at the world, he'd turned his back on goodness and the love coming from his pooooooooooor mother's great big broken heart.
