Snarky Candiru2

Saturday, 12 October 2013

We end the week with Elly telling John that most of why she's upset with the children is that she wants them to behave better than she and Phil did.

(Strip Number 4444, Original Publication Date, 13 October 1984)

Panel 1: Later that night, John tries to reassure Elly by telling her that fighting is just something siblings do.

Panel 2: After all, she and Phil never got along until they were in their twenties, it took him until he got hitched to stop sparring with Beth and so on and so forth.

Panel 3: He concludes by asking her why she thinks that Mike and Lizzie should be any different from their parents.

Panel 4: Her reason is that they're her and John's children.

Summary: While I do sympathize with Elly's wistful comment about wishing that her own children would not fall into the same trap she and Phil did, we part company when I notice that it's her slavish need to be the same sort of mother Marian was that all but guaranteed that they would. From her default assumption that Mike had to "help" by becoming Lizzie's caregiver to making him part of the brutal war between the sexes she and John have enlisted in, the CHAOS she mopes about is something she created herself.

ETA: Since Thanksgiving and being an ungrateful, entitled grouch who can't think of thing God-damned one to be grateful for like Lynn clash, the banner is the old standby wherein Elly wants to save ungrateful candy-and-therefore-CHAOS!!!!!-loving Lizzie from getting FAT and OLD and UGLY and UNDESIRABLE.
