Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 4 August 2013

Today's sort of unsettlingly sweet slice-of-life thing has Elly only mildly ruin a nice moment by standing there like a goombah because she has no visual imagination.

(Strip Number 6139, Original Publication Date, 5 August 1984)

Panel 1:: We start things off with John and Lizzie listening to the Stereo Of Being Accused Of Not Letting Elly Buy Appliances. As what could be practically anything plays, an impressed John invites Lizzie to join him in listening to the good ol'big band music.

Panel 2:: He creeps out the people who remember that in about twenty-three years, he bursts into Liz's bedroom so he can pimp Assthony by asking her if he can have this dance.

Panel 3: Having picked Lizzie up, John starts dancing to the music.

Panel 4: Lizzie tells Daddy to spin her around again.

Panel 5: He asks her where she learned to dance so well.

Panel 6:: We then switch to a polka rhythm when "Roll Out The Barrel" comes on.

Panel 7:: As a happy-yet-exhausted John and Lizzie sit down, Elly shows up and asks them what they've been doing.

Panel 8: Elly smiles as Lizzie tells Mommy that Daddy danced wif her and He said she was a good dancer!

Panel 9: Mommy ruins the moment by drawing a complete blank when Lizzie says "I didn't step on his feet once!"

Summary: This is probably because Elly formed the completely wrong mental picture when Lizzie said this. The instant Lizzie said something about stepping on John's feet, Elly formed the mental picture of John kneeling down to dance with Lizzie. Given Lynn eventually has John shove Liz into marriage with Anthony because it's the next best thing to marrying Dear Old Dad, any sort of sweetness that was in the original has been severely compromised.
