Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 30 June 2013

In today's strip, Lynn wants to hammer us over the head with the idea that children are terrible little hypocrites who get all fussy about dirt at home only to wallow in it when they're outside.

(Strip Number 6135, Original Publication Date, 1 July 1984)

Panel 1: We start things off with Lizzie sitting at the dinner table giving her drinking glass the once-over.

Panel 2: She complains that her glass isn't clean,

Panel 3: She follows that by rejecting a perfectly good piece of celery because it has dirt on it.

Panel 4: As if that weren't bad enough, she wants a cleaner fork because she dares to criticize the way Elly cleans.

Panel 5: She follows that act of hateful agression by saying that she doesn't want Elly's super-great soup merely because it tastes weird.

Panel 6: Next, she victimizes her poooooor, put-upon mother because she won't wear a jacket with apple juice on it.

Panel 7: Elly snarls under her breath as she gets Lizzie a clean jacket.

Panel 8: Angry, Angry Elly tells Lizzie that she can go outside and play.

Panel 9: She goes outside and sits in the mud with Christopher drinking mud tea.

Summary: The "joke", of course, is that the same Lizzie that martyrs Elly by making her clean up martyrs Elly by getting dirty. That's because it only looks like a slice of life strip about a child whose tolerance for dirt depends on where she is. The truth is that we're looking at Elly's life being made worse by people who like to make her life worse.
