Today's strip has John come up with the idea of shipping Mike off to Vancouver so he can placate the provider of his greaseburgers by removing something that antagonizes her. Great idea, Genius! Give a kid with abandonment issues a REASON to fear being sent away!!!

(Strip Number 640, Original Publication Date, 26 June 1984)

Panel 1: We start things off with Lizzie overhearing John as he tells Elly about the wonderful idea he had of sending Michael off to Vancouver.

Panel 2: After all, despite not being old enough to be trusted with a house-key, he is old enough to travel on his own.

Panel 3: Lizzie walks to Mike's room with a freaked-out look on her face as John says that they could put him on a plane at this end and Marian could pick him up at the other.

Panel 4: Lizzie tells Mike that he musta done somethin'bad 'cause they're talkin'about sendin'him away.

Summary: Yeah. I'll tell you what he did bad. He didn't greet the prospect of Elly sentencing him to a summer with the horrible Nichols children with the mindless glee he was supposed to. That's the bad thing he did.

In today's strip, we start to see why it is that Farley doesn't like being bathed. Simply put, witless Elly seems to go out of her way to make it a terrible experience for him.

(Strip Number 635, Original Publication Date, 19 June 1984)

Panel 1: We start off with Elly dragging Farley by the scruff of his neck and telling him that since he's filthy, he needs a bath.

Panel 2: As Mike looks on, Elly struggles with a fearful Farley and growls "Get in the tub!! Don't be such a baby!!"

Panel 3: My guess is that the look of discomfort on Farley's face isn't coming from the fact that Elly is cooing about how she'll get her good boy nice and clean as such as it's how she's doing it. Knowing her, she isn't diluting the shampoo and she forgot to brush out any knotted hair first. OUCH!!

Panel 4: She then tells a sad, humiliated looking dog "There! Now don't we feel better?"

Summary: Since Elly isn't very bright and doesn't understand that forcing a dog that's clearly afraid of water is going to reinforce his fear that he'll drown, it's clear that this is an old battle that no one will ever win.
