Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 30 June 2013

In today's strip, Mike, having observed how badly off Lizzie is, surprises Elly by being more concerned with her well-being than she is. To be fair, he is her primary care-giver so it's kind of appropriate that he act this way.

(Strip Number 620, Original Publication Date, 31 May 1984)

Panel 1: As Elly prepares dinner, Michael asks her how Lizzie is. Elly tells him that she's still not well.

Panel 2: Mike asks if he can see her only to be told that she's still asleep.

Panel 3: Mike looks in on a very sick-looking Lizzie and frowns.

Panel 4: His yelling "DUMB GERMS!!!" astonishes Elly.

Summary: I hate to be THAT guy but it looks to me that the reason that Elly is astonished is that Michael didn't immediately identify the real problem: her having to give up her identity as a librarian to become just another mother. Were he to care less about some sick child and worry more about someone whose suffering matters, she'd be less shocked.

False dicotomy of the home office

Lynn likes to demonize moms who work yet she is one. Now her counter is that I work from home. The thing is anyone with a home office will tell you that being disturbed etc breaks the concentration as much as anything in a regular setting. For instance when I have to hole myself up in my room to write an essay I get annoyed having to do chores etc. I know Lynn realizes this with Ruth helping to raise the kids so you wonder why she won't admit that she was a working mom who just happened to work out of her house.
