Snarky Candiru2

Monday, 6 May 2013

Today's strip is sort of a coda to the introduction of Michael's trumpet as well as a warning as to what's to come; that being said, Lynn is less focused on how Susan confuses being a dreary nag with sacrificing for her child and more on her (probably retconned) plan to make Susan a potential threat to Elly's marriage.

(Strip Number 607, Original Publication Date, 7 May 1984)

Panel 1:
We find Elly and Susan at the library comparing notes about kids and music practice; Susan leads off by telling Elly that she knows what she's going through because her daughter Meghan just started with the piano.

Panel 2: Meghan liked it at first but, for some unguessable reason that has nothing at all with her loving, firm, fair and understanding mother making it a horrible, dehumanizing burden, wanted to quit when it started to get hard.

Panel 3: Not that Susan will let her do so; she begs and bribes and pleads and threatens her daughter so as to make sure she practices.

Panel 4: Elly stands there looking mildly goggle-eyed when Susan tells her "It's amazing what we parents will do for the sake of our children."

Summary: Ten bucks says that if we were to meet up with the Susan of 2013, she'd tell us how ironic it was that Meghan's gift of music only appeared after she left home.
