Snarky Candiru2

Friday, 3 May 2013

In today's strip, Elly's attempt to boast to Marian about Mike's potential is subverted by a reminder of what he is right now: a goofy, work-averse kid who likes having fun surrounded by dour killjoys who want to save him from having a sense of humor.

(Strip Number 605, Original Publication Date, 4 May 1984)

Panel 1: Now that she and the rest of the family have come back from Phil's place, Elly is on the phone telling Marian that Phil is going to be coming by once a week to give Mike trumpet lessons.

Panel 2: She then goes on to say that Michael could grow up to be either a principal trumpeter in a symphony or a member of the Canadian Brass.

Panel 3: She then whines that it's too early to tell as her smile turns into the standard despairing frown when she notices that Mike is wearing the trumpet like a hat.

Summary: The premise, I should think, is that we're all supposed to join Elly in wailing in horror because Mike isn't taking things as brainlessly seriously as she takes every damned thing. Her need to piss, moan and gripe that her children are setting themselves up to fail and die because they try to have fun is almost as destructive as John's hateful need to flee his family.
