Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 28 April 2013

Today's strip seems to be all about how rough Katie and Aaron were with the clothes Lynn bought them. That's because Lizzie stress-tests what Lynn calls a puddle suit to see if Elly's claim that she can play in the rain without getting soaked holds water.

(Strip Number 7159, Original Publication Date, 29 April 1984)

Panel 1: We start things off with a drenched Elly coming in the house carrying a package. Given that she's gasping for air, she must have run inside to avoid fairly heavy rain.

Panel 2: When she walks by him, John makes an ass of himself by asking "Raining?"

Panel 3: We start the plot in earnest as Elly tells Lizzie that she bought her a puddle suit; this appears to be a Canadianism for a sort of coverall that a child can wear in the rain.

Panel 4: That being said, Elly helps Lizzie put it on while telling her that she can now play in the rain without getting wet.

Panel 5: As Elly looks on, Lizzie splashes her feet in the puddles on the front walk.

Panel 6: Next, she jumps in a big puddle.

Panel 7: She follows that by standing right under the drainspout.

Panel 8: Finally, she lays down in the street next to where the rain water is sluicing into a storm drain.

Panel 9: We finish things off with Lizzie walking into the house soaked to the skin telling a horrified Elly that the suit doesn't work.

Summary: It seems to me that a better, more humane author would shake her head in mild amusement at the odd way silly little children behave. Lynn is not all that humane and is bound to use her strip as a means of getting on her adult children's case about how she had to pay for the clothes they thoughtlessly ruined.
