Snarky Candiru2

Tuesday, 16 April 2013

In today's strip, Elly is astonished when Bad Influence Gordon tries to ruin (and not liven up) her lovely (and not pathetically lame) party by asking if anyone knows blackjack.

(Strip Number 594, Original Publication Date, 17 April 1984)

Panel 1: We fast-forward to Michael's birthday party. Our hostess with the leastest treats her guests to that old stand-by where they're supposed to try breaking balloons without stepping on them or squashing them between their hands.

Panel 2: She then has them play that old, old game where they pass peas from spoons held in their mouths.

Panel 3: As Darryl finishes pinning the tail on the donkey, Elly tells them that she has one five-dollar prize left but has run out of Depression-era party games to play.

Panel 4: When Gordon suggests they play blackjack for it, Elly stands there looking like she got hit by a two-by-four.

Summary: While I do know that Elly sincerely believes that by doing this on the cheap, she's going to get the reputation of being a model of sense and good parenting in a world of spoiled children who don't want to face the "reality" that they owe their parents every dime spent on them. The problem is that she instead ends up looking like that cheap-ass idiot who thinks her kids owe her a living because she expects to be paid for common decency. Oh, wait.....that latter one is what she is.

Dear Everyone

As much fun as picking the strip apart can be and as much genuine fail as there is, there are more and more days when I feel like the bitching goes overboard, some people go out of their way to look for something to bitch about, and it's the same things being said over and over. Elly's a paranoid idiot who can't parent. John's an ignorant blowhard. We all know that, the strip continues to prove that. Point made. The same things are said about Lynn's failings, weaknesses and shortsightedness over and over as well. I honestly wonder sometimes if some people haven't become just a little obsessed with Foobery and pointing up everything that's wrong with it (possibly seeing some things that aren't there in their eagerness to spot wrongs). For these reasons, I'm leaving binky_betsy.

I don't know, time-wise, how long I've been here, other than it's been a number of years; a friend pointed me in this direction after Lizard was assaulted and Pornstache whined he no longer had a home, so however long ago that was. It's been long enough and I 'know' a number of you well enough I didn't want to vanish without saying I was leaving and why, and saying that it's been a lot of fun, and I've found the discussions about the strips and the issues they raised interesting and challenging. Thank you.
