Snarky Candiru2

Tuesday, 2 April 2013

The second part of the "Chopped Liver Is You, Elly" arc has John bleat piteously about how being turned down by beautiful women is bad for his self-image; this leads Elly to ask him what gave him the courage to date her.

(Strip Number 585, Original Publication Date, 3 April 1984)

Panel 1: John picks up where he left off yesterday by explaining that when he was single, he never would have dared asking someone as attractive as Susan on a date.

Panel 2: You see, he would have been afraid of being turned down.

Panel 3: He then reminds Elly what he really thinks of her by telling her that she has no idea how badly being turned down by a beautiful woman would crush his ego.

Panel 4: Realizing that she's possibly been called at best homely, she asks him what gave him the courage to date HER.

Summary: While he tap-dances his way out of it tomorrow, the damage has been done. Elly realizes that he married her for her wide, child-bearing hips and her readiness to swallow her pride in exchange for things. Gee. I wonder if she realizes that her using a national forum to tell Rod that he's a creep because she can't imagine anyone actually thinking she's beautiful might have impacted her marriage.
