Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 24 March 2013

In today's strip, John gives Elly way-too-complicated instructions on how to start his car so that Lynn can boast about being able to drive stick.

(Strip Number 7154, Original Publication Date, 25 March 1984)

Panel 1: We start things off Elly interrupting the game of Monopoly John is playing with Mike to tell him that she's going to run into town to get a few groceries and ask him if she can use his car.

Panel 2: You see, hers is out of gas owing to her odd habit of never actually filling the damned tank.

Panel 3: As she tries to head out, she finds that the engine will not turn over.

Panel 4: Having heard the poignant sound of an internal combustion engine pleading for its life, John asks Elly if she can't get it started.

Panel 5: He then tells her to shove over to the passenger seat.

Panel 6: He continues on with the 'let a big strong man do it' speech by telling her that she should give the gas a couple of quick shots before turning the key.

Panel 7: She should next jiggle the key slightly, keep the gear in neutral and hold the clutch half-way in.

Panel 8: Next comes pumping the gas pedal four more times, pulling back slowly on the clutch and giving it gas when she hears a whining sound.

Panel 9: The (poorly-maintained) engine then roars (noisily) to life.

Panel 10: John concludes things by telling an exhausted and confused Elly that it's just that easy.

Summary: I don't know if it's Lynn's intent to make John out to be a patronizing oaf who's giving his weak little wifey the benefit of his knowledge. What I do know is that he should get his ride looked at because it shouldn't be that 'easy' to start a car, manual or automatic. That being said, the Lynnsight is all about how proud Lynn is that she knows how to drive stick and also contains the inspiration for the "John gets pulled over for speeding" arc.
