Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 7 February 2013

In today's strip, Mike returns home from school to find the place locked up because Elly was running late. Lawrence looks in the window and, having noticed that the furniture is still there, assures our boy that she's gotta be coming back.

(Strip Number 547, Original Publication Date, 9 February 1984)

Panel 1: As they walk up the driveway to the Pattermanse, Mike asks Lawrence if he wants to come in. Lawrence says "Yeah, sure."

Panel 2: Mike knocks on the door and calls for Elly to no avail.

Panel 3: He then tries the knob and realizes that he's been locked out and no one's at home. Lawrence, who's familiar with the situation, suggests that she's probably still at work.

Panel 4: Lawrence then climbs in the window and says that since the furniture is still there, she's gotta be coming back. Nice.

Summary: It's things like this that make it hard for Mike to be enthusiastic about Elly's job. After all, we are dealing with a rather dumb little boy who thinks that whatever is happening to him right now is going to keep happening forever. Elly will always leave him locked outside with nowhere to go because she assumes that he knows that if he's locked out, he'll go to a friend's house despite not being told that he could. In his mind, it's safer to stand outside and get cold than get yelled at for doing something he didn't know he could do.
