In today's strip, Elly guilt-trips John about how he's letting himself go to pot. He might vigorously deny that he feels guilty but then so did April when Jim pointed out how jealous she is of Becky.

(Strip Number 533, Original Publication Date, 5 January 1984)

Panel 1: We start off with Elly (who's wearing the same clothing she herself thought ludicrous) asking John what he thinks HE'S laughing at.

Panel 2: At least she's joining a fitness class; all he's doing is sitting home getting tubby.

Panel 3: As she leaves, John yells "Oh, no, you don't! I'm FINE!! You can't make ME feel guilty!!!"

Panel 4: Elly tells Connie "Good. He feels guilty."

Summary: Given that Rod is a lot more athletic than John is, my guess is that making JFTF into a happy slug is Lynn's way of getting back at the man for his 'militaristic' habit of regular exercise. Well, that and probably channeling Calvin's Dad and telling her that horrible, horrible hard work breeds character.

In today's strip, we remind ourselves of something that Elly probably thinks is unfair and wrong; that's because she wears herself out during the warm-up exercises.

(Strip Number 4398, Original Publication Date, 6 January 1984)

Panel 1: Now that we're at the class, Drill Sergeant Melanie leads her troops with a call of "Now, bounce and bounce-bounce-bounce and turn on one-two-three!"

Panel 2: She follows this with "Twist-twist-twist-twist again, six, seven, eight and back and side...."

Panel 3: An exhausted Elly lays down on a mat, groans in pain and tells Connie that that was great.

Panel 4: Connie tells her to get up because that was just the warm-up; Elly is horrified.

Summary: What Elly never seems to understand is that someone who's used to the sedentary lifestyle of doing household chores and running after slow-moving children cannot, repeat, CANNOT suddenly switch to a high-impact regime like this without being impacted. It's a good thing Coffee Talk is through or else we'd be getting people echoing how unfair it is that one set of exercise is not like the other.
