Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 2 December 2012

In today's strip, Michael and Lizzie ask Elly to look after various items of clothing which need to be repaired. Her response of "put it/them on the mending pile" baffles Michael because he says (to Elly's chagrin) that Mom usually leaves them on the pile until they no longer fit.

(Strip Number 6122, Original Publication Date, 4 November 1983)

Panel 1: We start things off with Elly making some sort of pie or something; as she mixes the ingredients, Michael comes up to her and tells her that he's got a hole in his pajamas.

Panel 2: She smiles as she tells him to put it on the mending pile.

Panel 3: As Elly reaches into a cupboard, Lizzie tells her about how her blouse has a button off; Elly tells her "That's fine; just put it on the mending pile."

Panel 4: A few minutes later, Michael tells her that one of his pairs of jeans is too short and asks if he can fix his blue sweater.

Panel 5: He's immediately followed by Lizzie who interrupts Mommy as she rolls out a pie crust with a complaint that she's got a hole in the knee and a broken zipper on the slacks she's wearing.

Panel 6: Elly is no longer smiling as she advises them to just put the clothes in question on the mending pile.

Panel 7: As he and Lizzie look at the mending pile, Mike says that he wonders why Mom calls it that.

Panel 8: When Elly overhears Mike's comment about how she usually just leaves clothes there until he and Lizzie grow out of them, she's so astonished that she lets go of the measuring cup she's holding.

Summary: The reason, of course, is that she thinks that Mike is slamming her commitment to being a good mother; this is because neither she nor Mike are able to see that she simply spreads herself too thin to be the super-mom she wants to be.
