In today's strip, Lizzie doesn't want the pumpkin to know that Elly plans to make him into a pie.

(Strip Number 492, Original Publication Date, 3 November 1983)

Panel 1: We find ourselves in the kitchen watching Elly getting ready to bake something. As she starts getting the bowls down, she asks Lizzie to bring the pumpkin in off of the porch. Lizzie wants to know howcome.

Panel 2: Elly's telling her that she wants to cook him up and bake him into a pie freaks Lizzie out.

Panel 3: Lizzie's response is to "Shhhh" Elly; Elly asks her what's wrong.

Panel 4: What's wrong is that Lizzie doesn't want the pumpkin to hear her.

Summary: Since Lizzie's three, the idea that she'd see anything with a face as having a personality like her own and thus a desire to not be cooked and eaten is something that can be expected of her. Since Lynn can't identify emotionally with other people, what we see as a small child thinking like a small child is seen as a dolt whining about nothing.

Were we to hear his side of things, we would no doubt be told about his encounter with a pleasant enough middle aged woman who looked at him and his sig-o as if they were from Mars. Here, we get her reveling in freaking people out.
