Snarky Candiru2

We end the week with John telling Elly that he doesn't want to be anywhere near the Grubberware party; too bad his need to be a jackass prankster marches hand in hand with his need to be a dude.

(Strip Number 482, Original Publication Date, 15 October 1983)

Panel 1: We start things off with Elly telling John that she let Annie talk her into co-hostessing a Grubberware party at the Pattermanse.

Panel 2: Her blithely explaining that aside from the sales agent, there will be nine or ten other women before stating that she will have to clean and bake clearly gives him the screaming habdabs.

Panel 3: He asks her when this is supposed to happen; she asks if he intends to come.

Panel 4: He says "No. I'm planning my escape."

Summary: This is owing to his very real need to not be known as Domestic Man, the emasculated horror freak that attends Grubberware Parties and baby showers. It's better for him to become "The nutcase dentist who crashed a Grubberware party like a damned fool eight year old boy raiding his sister's sleepover."

Something I found on the web that I think matters.

The oddest thing happened a little while ago while I was watching the news; you see, there's a public service announcement here in Canada called "It's a girl" that handles the whole subject of the Coming-after way better than Lynn could. We start out benignly enough bearing witness to a baby shower. Things are going pleasantly enough when the new mother opens up a present to find a whistle. She's puzzled for a second when the donor of the gift explains "It's a rape whistle." This is followed by an on-screen caption explaining that one in two women in Canada will be either physically or sexually abused at some point in their lives and then the logo of the sponsoring organization, the Canadian Women's Foundation. I don't know about you but when it comes to serious topics like sexual assault, a punch to the gut like this is a lot better than Lynn's meek tap on the shoulder.
