Snarky Candiru2

Wednesday, 26 September 2012

In today's strip, Michael interprets his parents' lack of patience with his not immediately falling asleep at bedtime as their trying to get rid of him.

(Strip Number 472, Original Publication Date, 28 September 1983)

Panel 1: We find ourselves watching a fairly peeved John ask Mike why he's gotten out of bed again; Mike says that he's getting a drink of water.

Panel 2: A few minutes later, Elly finds Mike underfoot, asks him why he's out of bed this time and gets told that he's looking for his teddy bear.

Panel 3: Since John has a low boiling point and not much in the way of sympathy for his children, it makes sense that his response to that would be to yell for Mike to march into bed and stay there.

Panel 4: We end with Mike telling himself that they must be trying to get rid of him or something.

Summary: What John and Elly tend to lose sight of is that children remember things. The two of them clearly seem to have spent their lives consoling themselves with the comfy delusion that they needn't stress about screw-ups because children don't keep track of what Mommy and Daddy say but they're wrong. This comes back to bite them in their fat Patterasses in a few years when the children mutate into teenagers who are surly for no reason that they can determine.
