Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 9 September 2012

Today's Sunday strip reminds us why Deanna thought of Elly as a role model; that's because instead of finding something constructive to do with Lizzie, all that the screaming twit in the ponytail knows how to do is yell "DON'T!!"

(Strip Number 7143, Original Publication Date, 11 September 1983)

Panel 1: We start things off with Lizzie casually getting her palm-prints on Elly's nice clean windows.

Panel 2: This has the end result of Elly yelling at Lizzie. What she's yelling will become clear slightly later.

Panel 3: Whatever it was she yelled, she's yelling it again because Lizzie is tormenting Farley.

Panel 4: Elly also yells whatever she yelled before because Lizzie is putting Play Klay on the TV screen.

Panel 5: I can sort of get behind Elly yelling whatever she's been yelling here because Lizzie shouldn't be screwing around with the toilet.

Panel 6: Nor should she be ripping up the wallpaper.

Panel 7: Ah, if only Lizzie knew how to do something constructive instead of jumping on the couch. Then Elly wouldn't yell whatever she's been yelling the last six panels.

Panel 8: In any event, Lizzie says that she gives up.

Panel 9: She then thought-bubbles that every time she finds something else to do, Elly tells her to go find something else to do!!

Summary: We know that this is not only an open invitation to either complain about Katie and Aaron or to bleat about how awful Lynn's mother was, it's a clear attempt by a woman who relied on a series of nannies to solicit pity from real busy mothers who don't have help or time to themselves. What it also is is a reminder that just as Deanna would do later on, Elly would rather stand around and yell at a child than show her what to do. That's because both of them seem to labor under the ludicrous misapprehension that they don't have to do anything like that; all they have to do is say 'find something else to do' and their kids will magically know to do something constructive.
