Snarky Candiru2

Wednesday, 15 August 2012

In today's strip, John does something stupid and useless when he tries telling the humorless paranoiac he married that he was just goofing around. Since he's kind of clueless on top of being insensitive, I should think that while he does learn that Elly works too hard, he never quite figures out that Elly delights in feeling miserable and angry.

(Strip Number 4360, Original Publication Date, 17 August 1983)

Panel 1: We continue on with Learning-Impaired John trying to tell Stone-Faced Elly that she's too sensitive and should maybe not take every jibe seriously. (Insert comment about that being his job here.)

Panel 2: He then tells her to do something else that he won't do (because his feelings actually matter) when he tells her that she's got to learn the difference between a joke and an insult.

Panel 3: She responds to his treating her like a child by childishly blowing a raspberry at him.

Panel 4: He asks if that's a joke or an insult.

Summary: Given that John's immediate response to the least zing at his expense is to turn the same shade of magenta that Sinestro is and either threaten the person just kidding around with violence or to just haul off and smack the defiant Martian princess, this, to say the least, is humorous. To say the most, it's rank hypocrisy.
