Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 5 August 2012

In today's strip, Farley wanders around the neighborhood and gets into all sorts of mischief. This would be bad enough were it not for the super-defensive Lynnsight that accompanies this lovely example of negligent pet ownership.

(Strip Number 7022, Original Publication Date, 7 August 1983)

Panel 1: We start things off with Farley sitting in the back yard listening to the barking of another dog. This somehow attracts his attention.

Panel 2: Since the gate was never really fastened all that securely, it's easy for him to open it like he does here.

Panel 3: He then leaves the safety of the yard.

Panel 4: The first thing he does is root through some fellow's garden and get yelled at.

Panel 5: Next, he comes within inches of becoming road kill.

Panel 6: He tops witlessly wandering into traffic by leaping up onto an old lady with an angry, yapping chihuahua.

Panel 7: Next, he and another poorly supervised dog root through some idiot's trash.

Panel 8: We shift focus from the results of incompetent pet ownership to the incompetent pet owner as Elly tells the person at the other end of the phone that that does sound like her dog and that she'll be right over.

Panel 9: We next see Elly all squinty-eyed with rage as she tells Farley that he's been a bad dog so it's the garage for him. As she does so, Mike looks on.

Panel 10: Mike then tells Elly that he's not sure but he thinks that Farley is smiling.

Summary: The stupid premise (Farley wants to embarrass Elly because he's on the kid's side) would be bad enough if the notes weren't all about how little Lynn likes it when people tell her that they hate to see Farley be put in harm's way because Elly is stupid and negligent. The only thing that makes her angrier than being told that the Pattersons should be ashamed of the way they treat their pets is being told that her written English leaves a lot to be desired.
