Snarky Candiru2

Friday, 22 June 2012

Today's strip marks something of a milestone. That's because this is the earliest known example of a Patterson profitting from the misery of a stranger. Today, it's Mike getting those skates for a lot less because the original owner broke his leg. Tomorrow, it's him getting a job he's underqualified for because his predecessor fell victim to a Stalinist-style purge.

(Strip Number 428, Original Publication Date, 24 June 1983)

Panel 1: We find ourselves watching John read the paper. It would seem that he's looking through the classifieds right now because he tells Mike that there's a second-hand pair of skates in the paper that are his size.

Panel 2: He then tells Mike that they're like new and the previous owner's mother wants twenty dollars for them. Mike is understandably thrilled.

Panel 3: After he makes all the arrangements with the previous owner's mother, Elly asks John why the woman wants to sell them.

Panel 4: She goes all wide-eyed when John says that the left one won't fit over the cast.

Summary: The notes probably won't be about how Mike just profitted from someone else's pain. They'll probably be about how dangerous skates are if they're not about how people worry too much about children getting injured.
