Today's attempt to plead for sympathy for poor mothers who have nooooooo help and nooooo time to themselves reminds us that since Elly's children are evil little strangers, she has to work on Mother's Day.

(Strip Number 6108, Original Publication Date, 8 May 1983)

Panel 1: As Lizzie and Mike creep down the hallway with breakfast in bed for Elly, Farley makes a bit of a whuff noise.

Panel 2: Lizzie shushes him.

Panel 3: Mike wishes a confused Elly a HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY.

Panel 4: Mike explains to a delighted Elly that they made breakfast themselves. John's malicious smirk comes from his realization of what Elly will face: a mess and a rat-bastard husband who acts like being asked to pick up a dishcloth equates to being castrated, the filthy prick!!!!

Panel 5: Since Lizzie thinks that Mommy wants her to talk baby talk, she says that they maked toast an'cereal wif milk.

Panel 6: Mike says that she didn't know that they were making her breakfast in bed.

Panel 7: As they walk towards the kitchen, Mike says that he and Lizzie wanted to give her a surprise.

Panel 8: Elly gets an unpleasant one. That's because she just remembered that an eight year old boy and three year old girl can't make breakfast without making a mess. A mess that she has to clean up. A mess that she has to clean up on what's supposed to be her day off.

Summary: I do get that being a parent is difficult and I do understand the frustration with some of the dumb, thoughtless things that children do. What bothers me is that Lynn and Elly don't understand that 'thoughtless' means just that. It simply didn't occur to Mike or Lizzie to clean up and, since they've learned to tune out Mommy's tragedy pleas, never quite understand why a mother who rushes around on Mother's Day because she says she needs to 'earn' it would complain in the first place. Anyway, here's another attempt to get sympathy from Janelle J and Diane S for you. Enjoy.
