Snarky Candiru2

Monday, 23 April 2012

If things run true to form today, we should be seeing John's answering Elly's weary complaint about Lizzie's volatile temper with a smart remark about how easy it is to set Elly off. While the guy is a jerk making a demeaning put-down, we should at least admit that he does have a point.

(Strip Number 4322, Original Publication Date, 25 April 1983)

Panel 1: We begin things with Elly trying to dress Lizzie. As she tries putting one pair of shoes on her, Lizzie holds up another pair and yells "NO!!! NO WANNA!! NO WANT DOSE SHOES!! WANT DEESE ONES!!"

Panel 2: As Lizzie rolls on the floor screaming and yelling like the three year old she is, Elly reacts to her daughter's fleeting rage by wearily telling John that Elizabeth can really throw a tantrum when she wants to.

Panel 3: Since John is an ass who thinks that women have the minds of children, he makes a crude and demeaning comment about how she takes after her mother. Elly's reaction to this is an inappropriate astonishment. I mean, come on!! She should have clued into the fact that he's a DNA base pair away from scraping his knuckles on the floor by now, right? Right?!

Summary: While the smirking Neanderthal with the glasses meant his crude put-down to mean that he thinks that women let scary, baffling hormones do their thinking for them, he does have a point in spite of being a retrograde jerkwad who lets stereotypes and shibboleths do his thinking for him. Elly can go from placid to enraged very quickly and for very stupid reasons.
