Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 22 April 2012

In today's strip, Mike decides to make a long-distance call to talk to Jim and Marian; since Elly likes to talk but has no idea what 'personal space' is, she stands there feeding him topics to hurry things up only to refuse to take over when he catches on to what she's doing.

(Strip Number 6107, Original Publication Date, 24 April 1983)

Panel 1: We start things off with Mike looking at a picture of Jim and Marian on the mantle and saying "Gee..."

Panel 2: As he martyrs Elly by getting his thumbprints on the photo, he tells himself that he hasn't talked to either of them in the longest time.

Panel 3: Mike decides to rectify this by phoning them. As he says hello to Gramma, Elly, who's sewing her own clothes, smiles and tells him to tell her about his hockey tournament.

Panel 4: They, uh, won their hockey tournament.

Panel 5: He again tries to think of something to say on his own; before he can make some comment about missing her and wondering when they're coming back, Elly butts in to remind him to thank her for the sweater she sent. He does so,

Panel 6: She then prompts him to tell them how he's doing in school. He tells Marian that he's doing fine.

Panel 7: He interrupts her next annoying prompt by asking her if she should simply take over the conversation.

Panel 8: Since she hasn't the blindest idea that she's spent most of it interrupting him, she smiles the smile of the contented when she says that that won't be necessary because he's doing fine by himself.

Summary: The notes allude to the expense of long distance as well as the fact that Lynn herself has no idea that what she sees as being helpful is really annoying. Since she's really that oblivious, she can get pissed at people who do that do her while not even noticing that she's doing it herself.
