Snarky Candiru2

Wednesday, 21 March 2012

In today's strip, Elly is angry at the whole world for not telling her that she'd made the mistake of buying an unlined bathing suit that turns translucent when wet. This bad mood gets her into a minor fender-bender tomorrow.

(Strip Number 380, Original Publication Date, 23 March 1983)

Panel 1: We find ourselves at the food court watching Anne ask Elly why she simply doesn't wear the suit she got last year.

Panel 2: Elly bellows "Are you kidding??" before explaining that people can see right through it when it gets wet.

Panel 3: She then whines about spending forty dollars on a suit she can't swim in.

Panel 4: Her telling Annie that the worst thing about it is that it had taken her all summer to find out astonishes her.

Summary: This is supposed to be because Annie is horrified that Elly unwittingly made a revolting spectacle of herself by showing off her too solid flesh. The problem is that people do something else Lynn doesn't approve of: apply real-world logic to things and ask themselves "Is Elly really that dumb that she didn't notice this immediately or that stubborn that it took her two months to clue into what people were trying to tell her?" instead of whining "Poor Elly. She spent all summer chasing after her awful children who wouldn't behave because children are always evil and never got to swim but the once."
