Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 8 March 2012

In today's strip, Elly gets to be martyred because her evil children like soup from a can better than what she worked and worked and worked to make. Let a thousand passive-aggressive letters to Coffee Talk be written, let a thousand entries on that betray an inability or refusal to see things from the viewpoint of a small child be posted.

(Strip Number 376, Original Publication Date, 10 March 1983)

Panel 1: We start off with a smiling Elly holding a steaming pan of something and telling her family that they're about to experience a genuine culinary treat.

Panel 2: She tells Mike and Lizzie that straight from Mother's kitchen is real, honest-to-goodness, home-made soup that hopefully isn't the stuff that started to burn because she was whining about John.

Panel 3: Having noticed that her children aren't shoveling her dubious cooking down their throats like they're supposed to, she asks them what could be the problem. It isn't out of a can and is thus real so they should be eating it.

Panel 4: Mike's telling her that he prefers the canned soup to her own cooking baffles her.

Summary: Is it an inconvenience and a disappointment that she works hard to make stuff her family hates? Yes. Does she show any sign of understanding why? No. As her notes will indicate, Lynn never really understood how her offsprings thought or why they didn't like her cooking. What she does understand is that she's not alone in being angrily baffled by this.
