Snarky Candiru2

Mike's need to be reassured that Elly actually still loves him totally blindsides her. What really makes this an annoying thing to see is not that she feels like a jerk after her rant about how he's slowing her down but that we've seen this happen before. A lot.

(Strip Number 4305, Original Publication Date, 2 March 1983)

Panel 1: After the washing bath, Elly bids Mike good night. He reciprocates but then wants to ask Elly something.

Panel 2: Elly then makes that stupid-ass palms-out gesture as she rants about how he does this every night. He could easily ask all the questions she doesn't have time to listen to during the day during the day but he has to stall for time by waiting until she can't avoid him.

Panel 3: Butt-Hurt Nitwit Elly tells him to spit it out.

Panel 4: His question "Do you love me?" totally blindsides her and makes her frown in confusion, embarrassment and despair.

Summary: As I said, Elly doesn't seem to do anything to reassure him that she loves him. While we know that she loves but doesn't like him, he has no way of knowing that because she never answers that question in a way that reassures him. Also, look for the Lynnsight to further cloud the issue and for letters that make it clear that Kool-Aid Nation don't understand the emphasis on yelling, anger and hurt feelings.
