Indignant Candiru

Thursday, 9 February 2012

Today's strip is a reminder that John is not on the cutting edge of dentistry. It's also a slam against Rod's patients and, by extension, Rod himself.

(Strip Number 4296, Original Publication Date, 10 February 1983)

Panel 1: We switch focus from Elly trying to force her children to eat crap to watching John at the convention. Since the dentist who's asking John if he sat in on that morning's talk on implants looks like a fatter, balder Phil, I'm going to call him Doctor Phillips.

Panel 2: Phillips believes that the recent mandibular subperiostal designs have possibilities and asks John for his opinion.

Panel 3: He then sets up the punchline by asking John what he thinks will be the next great breakthrough in dental science.

Panel 4: John says "Getting my patients to use a toothbrush."

Summary: It's probably not very pleasant for Rod to have to remember how little Lynn thought of his career. Here he is trying to make a difference and he has to look at cheap shots about how futile his life is, how he should just give up and let her support him. That, of course, is not even remotely half of what's wrong with this strip. Consider who his patients were at the time: the Cheating Cheaters who Cheat who lived in Lynn Lake and the First Nations people Rod took her out to on those boring, scary flights to the middle of nowhere and then read this strip. You'll wish that Lynn had joined Jenny and the wimp in getting a boot to the head.
