Snarky Candiru2

Saturday, 4 February 2012

In today's strip, Mrs Walsh tries telling Elly that she can't actually afford to pay her in terms that she hopes she can understand. It doesn't, of course, take owing to Elly's being a cementhead.

(Strip Number 4292, Original Publication Date, 5 February 1983)

Panel 1: We find ourselves at the storefront the Valley Voice used to call its offices. As Elly hands Mrs Walsh her column, she tells her that she's a bachelor wife this week because John's away at a convention.

Panel 2: Mrs Walsh repeats the phrase and then tells Elly that that sounds like a column she should write for them.

Panel 3: Elly points out that she's not being paid for the one she writes now. Mrs Walsh, who really can't afford to pay her until she gets more subscribers, sputters out a baffled "Paid? PAID?"

Panel 4: She's genuinely confused when she reminds Elly that she's being published.

Summary: As I recall, the Lynnsight in the book is all about how cheated Lynn felt that she only got a few lousy dollars for her efforts when she was cartoonist for a store-front paper like this. Neither woman seems willing to consider that when they work for a start-up, certain expectations have to be deferred.
