Snarky Candiru2

Tuesday, 13 December 2011

John becomes a stand-in for the parents that irritate Lynn by complaining about having to answer questions that they don't want to. Given that Elly turns around and plays the 'Later' card about having to talk about icky, nasty, scary sex, this is sort of a darkly comic thing to behold.

(Strip Number 351, Original Publication Date, 14 December 1982)

Panel 1: We find John asking Elly, who's carrying a load of laundry, whether she told Michael the truth about Santa.

Panel 2: Elly tells him that he wanted the truth.

Panel 3: She then asks him what he says when a child asks for the truth.

Panel 4: John says "Later."

Summary: This is because he's supposed to be a stand-in for the parents who Lynn thinks kept secrets from her because they delighted in keeping her ignorant so they could control her because they thought that they knew what was best for her. She knows what's best for her and their lying noise about protecting her infuriated her. Translated from "narcissistic dumbass" to "human being", however, what we're seeing is the petulant whinging of a clod who caught her parents in a lie and won't God-damned let it go.
