Snarky Candiru2

Friday, 9 September 2011

In today's strip, we have another reminder that the Elly that needs to wallow in misery is stronger than the one that needs time for herself.

(Strip Number 4219, Original Publication Date, 10 September 1982)

Panel 1: As Elly drives off to her interview, she smiles as she thought-bubbles that she's done it.

Panel 2: What she's done, of course, is put one offspring in school and the other in daycare.

Panel 3: This means that she's a free woman.

Panel 4: She then looks at herself in the rear-view mirror and, having noticed that she's frowning the goggle-eyed frown of existential horror, tells herself to stop looking at herself like that.

Summary: It is, as someone said, like dividing by zero with Elly because everything makes her feel put upon; she can't even be happy here because she thinks that other people will think that she wants to ditch her kids to go off and play. Also, she's being denied a chance to be martyred by her children so that counts as a form of martyrdom.
