Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 8 September 2011

In today's strip, we get a rather disturbing reminder of of the separation anxiety that drove Lizzie to act like a damned barnacle; given that the notes will probably turn the child's fear of being permanently abandoned as a joke, this is especially heart-rending.

(Strip Number 4218, Original Publication Date, 9 September 1982)

Panel 1: As our story continues, we find ourselves outside the Little Star Day Care Centre. Lizzie, who has no idea that Elly is not going to be with her, happily tells her that she pway wif toys an' see kids an' have cookies.

Panel 2: A sort of prototype of Moira Kinney who I'll call Mary greets Lizzie; since she still doesn't know what's going to happen, Lizzie says that she coming visit, play wif toys an' see kids.

Panel 3: As Elly leaves for her interview, she gives Lizzie a peck on the cheek and tells her bye-bye; Lizzie goes "Huh?" because she's starting to figure out that Elly isn't going to be around.

Panel 4: We end with a tight close-up of a panicky two-year old yelling "Mommy NOT STAYING???"

Summary: It's "funny" because Elly is too stupid to have explained going in that she's not going to be there; it's even "funnier" because the poor little child wants the attention her poor, put-upon mother simply cannot provide. The "funniest" part of all is that Lynn confuses the strong need her children had for her company with some sort of universal thing; that being said, it's clear that if Lizzie didn't mind Elly's departure, Elly would STILL be put-upon because "She doesn't need me any more, WAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!"
