Snarky Candiru2

Saturday, 3 September 2011

We end the week with Mike declaring that he's not going to do his homework; since his father is a bit of an ass about things, this isn't going to go over well.

(Strip Number 313, Original Publication Date, 4 September 1982)

Panel 1: We fast-forward from Elly looking like a maniac because she gets to talk to real people instead of children to Mike watching television; as he does so, John asks him if he has any homework tonight.

Panel 2: Mike tells him he only has a bit of homework; John tells him to show him the alleged bit.

Panel 3: An astounded John looks at the hours' worth of assignments and asks him how he can say there's a bit of homework given that there's a lot of things to be done.

Panel 4: His astonishment continues when Mike cheerfully declares that that's all he's going to do.

Summary: This not only marks the beginning of the annual battle Mike and Liz have against anything that requires a concerted mental effort (such as, say, making sure not to follow an up-tempo song with a long-distance dedication about a dog dying), it heralds Lynn's boasting that she intentionally froze Mike and Lizzie's age when it's more likely that she forgot that he was supposed to be eight because, well, she'd anger Casey Kasem by handing him a long-distance dedication about a dead [boxcar] dog after an up-tempo song because the alternative would require having to think.
