Snarky Candiru2

Friday, 26 August 2011

Today's strip is a bit of a milestone; that's because we have Elly answer a want-ad for a volunteer job down at the Valley Voice. The punchline teaches us something we need to learn: John's alleged chauvinism is qualified; he's not against working mothers if the children are old enough to go to daycare but he does insist that the job pay something.

(Strip Number 309, Original Publication Date, 27 August 1982)

Panel 1: We find Elly looking at a brightly-colored brochure of some description; when John asks her what she's doing, she tells him that she's enrolling Liz in playcare so she can have some free time.

Panel 2: You see, there's a chance she can do a column for the local paper.

Panel 3: John asks how much this job would pay; Elly tells him "Umm.....nothing."

Panel 4: As he repeats the word "Nothing", his eyes are bulged out in confused horror.

Summary: This is because of two things; he doesn't like the idea of Elly working and not getting paid and he doesn't understand what would drive her to dip into the household money and not bring anything back. She tells him what she hopes to gain tomorrow.
